Beaujolais

The region of the Gamay grape, just south of Burgundy — fruity, light-tannin reds; "the classic everyday wine of France."

Beaujolais is the name of the region and Gamay is the grape. The region is famous for its fruity red wines with light tannin — "the classic everyday wine of France" (source: European Wine Exploration Map _ Wine Folly.pdf).

Beaujolais sits immediately south of Burgundy (Bourgogne), and Gamay is one of the four grapes covered in Burgundy Grape Varieties — historically pushed out of the Côte d'Or in favor of Pinot Noir and given its own homeland here (see that page for the story). Of the trip's regions, it is the nearest "everyday counterweight" to the grand wines of the Côte d'Or.
