The city

Colmar is the most popular city on the Alsace Wine Route and the natural base for its southern half — the unofficial capital of Alsatian wine (source: The Ultimate Alsace Wine Route Itinerary ⭐️ 2026 Map.md; compass_artifact_wf-755602f0...). The old town is improbably intact: ranks of half-timbered houses, the canals of La Petite Venise, the Maison Pfister and Maison des Têtes, with the new Musée des Vins d'Alsace and the 1865 Marché Couvert close by (source: compass_artifact_wf-755602f0...).

At its heart is the Unterlinden, built around Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece. Colmar is also the birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, who sculpted the Statue of Liberty, and the departure point for the Kut'zig wine-village shuttle — so you can taste all day and still sleep somewhere with proper restaurants and a late train (source: Alsace Wine Route by Car – Itinerary & Map.md).

Our notesThe southern base

Busier and more touristy than the villages, but unbeatable as a hub — taste all day and still sleep somewhere with proper restaurants and a late train. The Kut'zig shuttle and bike rentals leave from the station.

Stay two nights and radiate out.

§From the wiki

Colmar is one of the cradles of tourism in Alsace and the most popular city on the Alsace Wine Route — the southern gateway in the Winalist itinerary and the starting point in the Travel France Bucket List itinerary (source: The Ultimate Alsace Wine Route Itinerary ⭐️ 2026 Map.md; Alsace Wine Route by Car – Itinerary & Map.md). It is famous for its Christmas market, ranked #1 in Europe, colorful half-timbered houses, canals, and the Little Venice district (source). A signposted 6.1 km walking loop (~2.5 hrs, follow the golden "Lady Liberty" triangles) links the top sights (source: Alsace Wine Route by Car – Itinerary & Map.md).
