Monastrell

Spain's name for Mourvèdre — one of the deepest, darkest reds, from Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas, at obscenely great values.

We've been calling this grape Mourvèdre (as the French do), but you'll find more of it in Spain than anywhere else in the world. Monastrell is one of the deepest, darkest red wines out there, loaded with black fruit, pepper, chocolate and herbal sage aromas. The regions of Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas all make exceptional examples — "all at obscenely great values" (source: European Wine Exploration Map _ Wine Folly.pdf).

Mourvèdre is also a component of southern-French blends — see Rhône Valley (Rhône Blends). Spain's other red entries are Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
