Nebbiolo & Barbera (Piedmont)

The two red grapes of Piedmont, northern Italy — juicy, zappy Barbera and perfumed Nebbiolo with some of the highest tannins in wine.

A scenic aerial view of the historic La Morra village in Piemonte, Italy surrounded by vineyards and mountains.

The two grapes of Nebbiolo and Barbera tell two very different stories about the Piedmont region of Northern Italy. Where Barbera zaps your mouth with an explosion of juicy fruit and acidity, Nebbiolo is a perfumed wine with some of the highest levels of tannins in the wine world. Best to taste them together — alongside some Tajarin pasta (source: European Wine Exploration Map _ Wine Folly.pdf).

Piedmont's sweet, fizzy side is Moscato d'Asti. For Italy's other benchmark reds, see Chianti (Tuscany) and Valpolicella (Veneto).
