§ 01Highlights

Highlights

  • The Douaumont Ossuary holds the remains of at least 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers and adjoins France's largest WWI cemetery (16,142 identified graves, inaugurated 1923) (source).
  • The Verdun battlefield was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2023 (source).
§ 02Practical note

Practical note

It is awkward without a car: battlefield sites are several km outside town with no nearby bus or train. Verdun town is reached by TER from Châlons-en-Champagne or via the Meuse TGV station (with a Fluo 55 shuttle). Best for travellers willing to detour and use a local guided tour or taxi (source: compass_artifact_wf-ba682d0f...).
