Freyburg & the Saale-Unstrut (Leißling / Naumburg)

The eastern-German region around Leißling — home of Jerry's deep Wohlust line (traced to the 1500s) — and Germany's northern sparkling-wine country, a thematic echo of Champagne but a meaningful detour from the trip.

Leißling — le village des Wohlust sur la Saale

This is the Becker / Wohlust homeland on Jerry's maternal side, centered on Leißling (a village in Weißenfels, Burgenlandkreis, Sachsen-Anhalt). Christy's research traces the Augusta Wohlust line back to at least the 1500s here (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf). See Jerry's Family History (Ulcek / Fiedler).

§ 01Family connection

Family connection

The Wohlust line runs through Leißling and neighboring Rödgen, then back through Aeschlen and Eggiwil (Bern, Switzerland) — after which, per Christy's research, "a few went to France Alsace" — and Fulda & Eichenrod (Hessen) (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf).

Contradiction / verification flag: a later heritage-research report finds "Wohlust" absent from the authoritative Register of Swiss Surnames and concludes it is a corrupted spelling of a genuine Emmental name (e.g. Wüthrich, Wermuth, Wyss, Wittwer, Wohlgemuth) (source: jerry-alsace.md). This does not square cleanly with the literal "Wohlust" line through Bern in Christy's research; the Swiss/Bern portion in particular should be treated as unverified pending the Eggiwil parish registers. The report also identifies Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines / the Val d'Argent as the most plausible Alsace landing zone for the "went to Alsace" tail — overlapping the trip's Alsace Wine Route destination. See Bernese-Anabaptist Resettlement in Alsace (the "Wohlust" research question).

  • WeißenfelsNeu-Augustusburg Castle, a regional-history museum.
  • Freyburg (Unstrut) — the heart of the Saale-Unstrut wine region, with sparkling-wine (Sekt) cellars and Neuenburg Castle overlooking the vineyards.
  • Nearby cities of Halle (Saale) and Erfurt.
  • Regional Christmas markets (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf).
§ 03Where to stay

Where to stay

  • Luxury/history: Hotel Schlossgarten in Naumburg, near the cathedral.
  • Mid-range/authentic: a Winzerhof (winegrower's estate) stay (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf).
§ 04Trip fit

Trip fit

Planning note (not from the sources): Saale-Unstrut is in eastern Germany (Sachsen-Anhalt), far from the Champagne–Alsace corridor — a separate leg, not a side-trip. Its draw for this group is thematic: it is Germany's northern sparkling-wine region, a natural counterpart to Champagne. It also sits near the Saxony/Dresden leg.
