Marsala is another region that suffers from too much sweet cooking wine entering the US market. In truth, great Marsala wines aren't as sweet as they are smoky — and once you know more about this wine, "you'll find yourself delighting in how affordable the good stuff is" (source: European Wine Exploration Map _ Wine Folly.pdf).
Marsala is on Sicily's west coast (general knowledge — not stated in the source); the island's flagship red is Nero d'Avola. Its fellow rehabilitated fortified wines are Sherry and Port.
