Port, from the Douro Valley in Portugal, was the first official, demarcated fortified wine in the world. The region is now a UNESCO Heritage site due to the influence of human agriculture on the rugged, mountainous landscape. The best Ports are found by understanding the different classifications — and Port "pairs with some of the most sumptuous desserts" (source: European Wine Exploration Map _ Wine Folly.pdf).

Portugal's fresh, zesty opposite number is Vinho Verde. The Douro is the same river that flows through Spain's Ribera del Duero (general knowledge — not stated in the source). The other fortified/dessert classics in the map: Sherry and Marsala.
