The Mosel (Moselle) Valley is one of Germany's most famous wine regions. Trier sits in its heart, on the Moselle near the Luxembourg border, serving as a gateway to the Mittelmosel (Middle Mosel) — known for steep slate vineyards and renowned Riesling wines. Trier is considered part of the Upper Mosel (Obermosel), marking the start of the main wine-growing area (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf).

§ 01Family connection

Family connection

The valley is the wider wine landscape around the Maas / Fox (Fuchs) family's home villages of Trier, Orscholz, and Freudenburg (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf). See Jerry's Family History (Ulcek / Fiedler).

§ 02Notable producers

Notable producers

Two adjacent districts flank Trier (source: jerry-alsace.md):

  • Saar (~30–40 min south): Egon Müller – Scharzhof (the legendary, exclusive estate behind Germany's most expensive wine — €12,000/bottle at the 2015 VDP auction), plus the more visitor-friendly Van Volxem, Peter Lauer, Dr. Wagner, Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken, and von Othegraven.
  • Mittelmosel (~40 min NE around Bernkastel-Kues): Dr. Loosen, Markus Molitor, Julian Haart; the Vinothek in the St. Nikolaus-Hospital, Bernkastel-Kues pours 150+ regional wines by the glass.

Make appointments and use a driver. Harvest runs late September into mid/late October, with Riesling picked last — atmospheric, but small estates may be too busy for walk-ins, so book ahead (source: jerry-alsace.md). See Trier.

§ 03Where to stay

Where to stay

  • Schloss Lieser — a castle hotel suggested in Christy's research as a Mosel-region place to stay (source: Ulcek final PPT.pdf).
  • BECKER'S Hotel (Trier-Olewig) — design hotel with a two-Michelin-star restaurant and a working family vineyard; the heritage-research report's top special-occasion pick for the area (source: jerry-alsace.md). See Trier.
§ 04Trip fit

Trip fit

As a Riesling region adjacent to the French border, the Mosel pairs thematically with the trip's Champagne and Alsace wine focus and anchors the optional +2-day Trier/Mosel detour in 12-Day Public-Transit Itinerary: Champagne · Alsace · Burgundy (a half-day river cruise or tasting on Day 3b).
