Primitivo
Italy's name for Zinfandel, grown in Puglia — sweet red fruit and leather in the export bottlings, deep blackberry and smoke in the serious stuff.

Primitivo is Italy's name for Zinfandel, grown in Puglia. The majority of the wines reaching the US focus on sweet, red-fruit flavors with subtle notes of leather, but the serious stuff offers deeper blackberry flavors and smoky notes. "The region of Puglia should be known for its exceptional quality" (source: European Wine Exploration Map _ Wine Folly.pdf).
Southern Italy's other reds in the Wine Folly map are Cannonau (Sardinia) and Nero d'Avola (Sicily).
