Vosges Mountains

The Vosges Mountains form the western backdrop to the Alsace Wine Route; the route runs along their eastern foothills, with medieval castle ruins on the ridgelines above (source: compass_artifact_wf-755602f0...). Towns like Molsheim, Turckheim, Kaysersberg, and Guebwiller are gateways for hiking, biking, and (in winter) skiing (source: The Ultimate Alsace Wine Route Itinerary ⭐️ 2026 Map.md).
Route des Crêtes
The Route des Crêtes is an ~88 km WWI-built panoramic ridge road from Cernay to roughly Col du Bonhomme/Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, passing the Grand Ballon (1,424 m, the highest Vosges peak), Hohneck, Markstein, and Col de la Schlucht, with fermes-auberges (farm-inns) serving the hearty marcaire meal (source: compass_artifact_wf-755602f0...). It is closed roughly December–March and spectacular in fall foliage (source).
A road-trip loop pairing the Wine Route with the Route des Crêtes is highly recommended in fall; the Black Forest (Germany) lies just across the Rhine (source: compass_artifact_wf-755602f0...).
